Dystonia Awareness Month
Dystonia Awareness Month: September is Over, but Our Mission Continues
EDUCATION
Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that causes muscles in the body to contract or spasm involuntarily. The involuntary muscle contractions cause twisting, repetitive and patterned movements as well as abnormal postures. Dystonia is not a single disease but a syndrome – a set of symptoms that cannot be attributed to a single cause but share common elements. Some forms of dystonia may affect a specific body area, such as the neck, face, jaw, eyes, limbs or vocal cords.

MISSION, VISION & VALUES
Our mission is to support, educate, and empower people living with dystonia and their families while raising awareness about this third most common movement disorder. Our goal is to provide a platform where patients and their families can learn about dystonia, its symptoms, and it’s treatments.
TREATMENTS
Properly treating dystonic symptoms depends on the patient’s age, mental and physical health, type of dystonia, affected body parts, and many more variables. This makes it an especially difficult condition to diagnose and treat. Positive results have been recorded with the use of noninvasive techniques such as breathing techniques, as well as with surgical options like deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy.

Your support makes our work possible. A donation of any amount will help raise awareness and support our efforts to transform the lives of those living with dystonia.
Events and Campaigns
It all starts with our family, friends and concentric circles. Please join us as we create a splash and help those with dystonia lead lives full of passion!

The first step to getting involved—whether you live with dystonia, love someone living with dystonia, or simply want to help us spread our message.
Dystonia Awareness Month: September is Over, but Our Mission Continues
The Medical Advisory Board will include neurologists and researchers specializing in movement disorders. They will advise the Board on the strategic direction of the organization, review content shared on the website treatment pages, and recommend publicly available research studies to share on the website and social media pages. Down with Dystonia is looking for experts in their field who are passionate about helping us to bring down dystonia
To kick off the 2020 FunDrive, The Kevin and Sandra Hutton Foundation agreed to match up to $25,000 in gifts from new donors during November and December. As Dr. Keener and Keith challenged us last year, we NEED to increase awareness about dystonia in our community.
People diagnosed with Dystonia are acutely aware of this debilitating neurological disorder…every day of every month. However, September is the month to raise everyone’s awareness!
